Implementation of Official Language policy at TH Peradeniya

TH Peradeniya located in the Central province which has population from diverse ethnic and cultural back ground. TH Peradeniya was selected as a model site in the health sector to implement the Official Language Policy (OLP) of the Government of Sri Lanka. Other Hospitals of this project include Teaching Hospital Mahamodara and the GH Trincomalee . Implementation of Official Language Policy (OLP) is a collaborative project betwenn the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of National Languages and the Social Integration.

The project intends to ensure improvement of visibility and staff commitment for implementing the OLP and thereby respecting language rights of diverse communities within the service area of Teaching Hospital Peradeniya. The project also strives to enhance effective institutional mechanisms to ensure sustainable and effective medical service deliveries to multi-ethnic citizens visiting the THP. The project will improve signage in Sinhala, Tamil and English within Teaching Hospital Peradeniya and implement a wide variety of programs to ensure that the THP would reconfirm the need for respecting the language rights of all ethnic communities.

The project was launched in May 2013. Technical and financial assistant for the project will be provided by the National Language Project and The Asia Foundation.
