Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes occurs when the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood becomes too high. A hormone called Insulin helps to take glucose from blood stream into cells to maintain a normal blood sugar level. There are 2 types of diabetes; type 1 and type II.
Diabetes association in Sri Lanka estimates as much as 1.5 million of our adult population has type II diabetes with only ½ being aware they are affected. Early detection and proper control of diabetes can prevent complications like premature heart attacks, kidney diseases, blindness and other eye diseases, strokes and foot problems. In Sri Lanka due to the increasing elderly population and prevalence of obesity due to change in life style and diet, the diabetic population is also increasing.See more..
