- We provide diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy facilities (upper gastro intestinal Endoscopy, Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography, Colonoscopy, Sigmoidoscopy) to in house patients, patients refereed by other units of the hospital, clinic patients and patients referred from other hospitals.
- Vascular Surgical treatment.
- We accept surgical patients for secondary and tertiary care from any level of Government hospitals. Our casualty admissions are done only on Sundays from 6 a.m. to Monday 6 a.m.

Introduction
Surgery is a discipline of medicine that deals with injuries or disorders of the human body by incision or manipulation especially with instruments.
With its origin dating back to 1963, the Professorial Surgical Unit was first established in Teaching Hospital Kandy but later moved to the TH Peradeniya in 1980. Colossal contributions of veteran Surgeons such as Prof. Fonseka, Prof. H.S. Keerthisinghe, Dr. H.L. Eaton, Dr. Barrkumarakulasinghe, Prof. A.P.R. Aluwihare, Prof. P.C.A. Ratnatunga, Dr. A.G. Buthpitiya and Prof. M.D. Lamawansa has helped to bring the unit into today’s position.
Our Team has Surgeons with training and experience in the fields of General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Transplant Surgery, Urological Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery and Colorectal Surgery.
Our unit is housed in wards 1 & 2. We have 3 dedicated operating theaters and an Endoscopic unit.
The Surgical unit trains the undergraduates at different stages of their medical career. We also involved in training Postgraduate candidates of PGIM Sri Lanka in General Surgical fields and other Surgical specialties such as Vascular Surgery.
